Starting in July 2007, Local Yokel Weather was created to fill the data and forecasting gaps that existed across SW NC, coupled with a goal of drumming up enthusiasm about the unique weather we have in SW NC.
For the first several years the weather station network grew, providing a simple forecast alongside data never before brought online. This new outlet gave representation to communities that experience fascinating and inspiring micro climates. It was an amazing time, interacting with folks from all across the area, adding to the collective knowledge of our extreme and unique climates. Through time the forecast grew in scope and detail, with my favorite product being the Snowcast Map. After fifteen years I decided to hang up my forecasting hat and focus on the endeavors I found more exciting. And let's be honest, I'd give myself a C + forecast grade over those fifteen years, maybe a B - during winter events. Although I strove for a quality forecast, my main interest was interacting with a weather community and capturing data in areas never before monitored; cue segway into my new focus.
In July 2022, I transitioned LYW away from forecasting to fundraising. My time working in the nonprofit sector has provided me with the confidence and knowledge on how to gather feedback from the community and rally that desire into something tangible. For now that means raising funds to install/maintain weather stations at outdoor recreation sites such as trailheads or perhaps the peak itself, another example are webcams to provide live traffic and/or access conditions at higher elevations or along waterways. In 2022, we raised funds and installed a station at Pinnacle Peak (working to fix it currently; not a good look I know) and are working on a second fundraiser campaign, coming in 2025.
A few months later in September 2022, I created Parkway Colors (www.parkwaycolors.com), a ground truth foliage tracking website for the Parkway during the spring and fall months, separate from LYW. These two areas (fundraising and Parkway Colors) keep me busy and although forecasting is still a fascination, I do not foresee myself returning to it anytime soon.
Not mentioned previously, but the main driver for this change is my family. Time is precious and for now, my energy and focus is better spent with family and friends, but trust that I'll keep promoting and fostering the weather scene here in SW NC.
Lastly, I have a monthly newsletter promoting the latest weather phenomenon or extremes for our area, answering questions from readers, and sharing some of the beauty others have captured across the region. Never miss an update by subscribing, sign up here.
Our goals are simple. Expand data collection and drum up enthusiasm about the
unique weather found here in SW NC.
We always encourage our readers to follow and engage with other weather sources,
in particular the National Weather Service out of GSP during life threatening events.
